A Mother & Daughter Escape to Armenia
Yerevan & Dilijan
A city break with character, history and great food
Our trip was in October, when my adult daughter and I slipped away to Armenia for a few days of culture, coffee and complete switch‑off. Splitting our time between lively Yerevan and the calming greenery of Dilijan turned out to be the perfect balance.
It was a short flight of around 3 hours 50 minutes from Dubai, and the country was already shedding its autumn leaves and quietly preparing for winter.
From the moment we arrived, Yerevan felt safe, lively and welcoming. In the evenings we wandered on foot, soaking up the atmosphere:
- Strolling through illuminated streets and lively squares
- Popping into local markets to see piles of fresh produce, spices and sweets
- Trying different restaurants each night, from cosy local spots to more modern places
- Lingering over coffee, dessert and glasses of local Armenian wine or brandy in characterful cafes and bars
Because we were staying so centrally, it was easy to head out again after a rest and explore until late. The city has an energy that feels both European and distinctively Armenian, with its own rhythm and charm.
We broke up our city time with two unforgettable day trips: one to Garni Temple and a nearby garden where we tried our hand at traditional bread‑making among apple, grape and plum trees, and another to Lake Sevan, where the vast, shimmering water and mountain backdrop delivered truly mind‑blowing views.
For the final two nights we retreated to the Best Western in Dilijan, surrounded by forested hills and fresh mountain air. Here, everything slowed down: quiet walks, long conversations and more time to enjoy local food and a glass of wine without any rush.
Dilijan has a much slower pace than Yerevan. The air feels fresher, the scenery is greener and life moves more gently. It was the perfect contrast:
- Quiet walks and time to simply look at the mountains and forests
- Moments to read, chat and reflect
- A chance to reset mentally, without a “to‑do” list
Where Yerevan gave us culture, coffee and city life, Dilijan gave us breathing space.
Why I Would Recommend Armenia for a Short Escape
Looking back, our five nights in Armenia felt much longer, in the best possible way. If you are looking for:
- A country with a shorter flying distance from the UAE
- A city break with character, history and great food
- Easy day trips to beautiful natural sights
- A mix of culture and calm, with time in both a capital and a mountain town
- A destination that is a little different from the usual European city break
…then Armenia is a destination I would wholeheartedly recommend,
especially for a mother–daughter trip or a getaway with a close friend.
