Maldives: Seaplane or Speedboat?
The transfer decision that could make or break your holiday...
The Maldives is consistently one of our top-selling destinations – and so conversations about transfer types crop up a lot when speaking to clients. For many people, this is where confusion sets in (and hidden extra costs can rack up VERY quickly). Read on to discover what could influence your decision.
Although your choice of resort will ultimately dictate your transfer method, choosing between a seaplane or speedboat could make or break your experience in the Maldives. It affects not only your budget, but your arrival experience, travel time, luggage allowance, and even travel sickness!
On my most recent escape to the Maldives (4th and counting!) I did a split-stay between two different properties with my family – all in the name of research of course – which allowed me to compare both speedboat and seaplane transfers in the same trip.
Here are a few things you need to know:
Speedboat resorts are typically in North Male Atoll and South Male Atoll, the closest atolls to Male, where you arrive at Velana International Airport. Journey times range from 10 minutes to around 90 minutes, depending on your resort location.
Seaplanes service resorts in more remote atolls, where speedboat journeys would be impractically long. Flight times can be anything from 20 to 70 minutes, and sometimes stop at other resorts on the way. Some resorts have arrival jetties attached, while others have pontoons moored in the lagoon nearby, and a boat will take you to the island itself.

The Speedboat Experience
My recent trip started with a speedboat transfer, as we were staying at a resort in North Male Atoll around 50 minutes from the airport. We were greeted by our resort rep and escorted to a small, covered speedboat waiting area, where you can sit and purchase refreshments if needed.
We did have to wait around an hour on this occasion – resort transfer teams group guests arriving at similar times – and stormy weather also delayed our speedboat’s inbound journey time. The unsettled weather made for a memorable transfer as it was certainly more choppy than previous visits! However, we arrived safely at the resort, sickness-free, and ready to relax.

Speedboat pros:
- Quick and simple – once you have collected your luggage, you go straight to the jetty instead of re-checking in and transferring to the seaplane terminal.
- Frequent departures – speedboats generally run more often, meaning less hanging around.
- No baggage restrictions – you can pack your full international flight allowance.
- More budget-friendly – speedboat transfers are considerably cheaper, meaning significant savings for families.
Speedboat cons:
- Sea conditions – on a calm day it feels like a scenic cruise, but on a windy day it can be bumpy
- Less of a “wow” factor – you still get lovely views, but not the iconic aerial view of the atolls
- Travel sickness – if you are prone to this, it could be a big drawback. (Insider tip: sit at the rear of the boat, as this is more stable and will minimise sea-sickness)
The Seaplane Experience
For the second part of our trip, we transferred back to Male by speedboat before heading to the seaplane check-in ready for our onward journey. For me, taking the seaplane was a long-awaited experience! I had always dreamed of that picture-perfect birds-eye view of the Maldives, but on previous trips it just hadn’t been feasible for one reason or another.
The experience is entirely different. After checking the bags (weighed very carefully!) you are driven to the seaplane terminal in a shared minibus, and here most resorts have their own private lounges to help ease the waiting time. Ours had a spa offering complimentary shoulder massages, a separate kids’ area with toys and games, and of course a range of soft drinks and snacks to keep you going. The waiting time for a seaplane can be longer – up to 2 hours or more depending on the weather and flight times – but the surroundings are far more comfortable!

When it’s time to board, walking along the pontoons and hearing the engines roaring to life is all part of the adventure, alongside the pilot and crew members who casually sport flip-flops along with their aviation uniform!

Seaplane pros:
- Incredible views – this is the biggest plus point, showing off this unique destination in all its turquoise glory
- Once in a lifetime feeling – for many, travelling by seaplane is a bucket-list item in itself, and a holiday highlight
- Access to more remote atolls – quieter lagoons, less boat traffic and more of a castaway feel
- Memorable for kids (and grown ups!) – if you love flying, this will be a hit
Seaplane cons:
- Cost – seaplanes are not a budget option, and can add a significant amount to the holiday cost
- Weight restrictions – strict baggage allowance (size and weight) for both checked and hand luggage, which is usually less than your international flight
- Fixed schedules and daylight-only operation – arriving (or departing) late in the afternoon/evening can mean an overnight in Male before or after your resort stay
- Noise and heat – seaplanes are loud and can be warm, with limited airflow; not always the glamorous experience they appear to be from the outside! There's no business class either...
Despite all of that, when we lifted off and the patchwork of turquoise atolls unfolded beneath us, I finally understood why so many people say the seaplane is worth it for the views alone.

So, which should you choose?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but it is often the most debated part of navigating Maldives bookings with my clients! In simple terms:
Choose a speedboat resort if:
- You want to get to your island as quickly and simply as possible after a long international flight.
- You are travelling with younger children who might be tired and fidgety by the time you land.
- You or a family member are nervous flyers, and the idea of a small plane does not appeal.
- You are conscious of budget and want to keep transfer costs down.
- You prefer to avoid strict baggage limits and hate travelling light!
Choose a seaplane resort if:
- You have always dreamed of that iconic aerial view of the Maldives.
- You are happy to spend a bit extra for a more remote, tranquil location and a special arrival experience.
- You are a reasonably confident flyer and the idea of a small plane feels more exciting than scary.
- You prefer fewer boats and deeper “away from it all” vibes.
- You or a family member really suffer with sea-sickness.

If you are still not sure which option is right for you, I can help - this is exactly the kind of decision I love supporting clients with. Once I know your budget, who you are travelling with and how you feel about boats and small planes, I can recommend Maldives resorts that match your perfect transfer type as well as your dream island experience.
It’s a destination that seem simple from the outside – but once you begin to research the huge array of resorts (and price ranges) it can be incredibly confusing. And that’s why clients come back to their Travel Counsellor time and time again to make sure they find the perfect fit – transfers and all!
