There’s nothing like getting behind the wheel, hitting the open road and gaining the freedom to explore picturesque areas at your leisure. Experience this amazing thrill for yourself by embarking on a self-drive tour of South Africa’s Western Cape!
Your adventure begins when you touch down in Cape Town International Airport, following an overnight flight via Johannesburg from London Heathrow. You’ll be met by an English-speaking representative and taken to pick up your rental car. From there, drive to the Vineyard Hotel, a colonial property ringed by landscaped parkland, for a three-night stay. Settle into your courtyard facing room on your first night and take this opportunity to sample the tantalising cuisine cooked by famous executive chef Mike Basset in the hotel’s atmospheric Myoga Restaurant.
The next two days will be spent exploring captivating Cape Town. On your second day enjoy the ‘Cape Malay Experience’, where you’ll discover the history of a fascinating indigenous culture, be acquainted with the art of mixing masala spices and learn how to make local treats such as ‘rooti’ flatbread, samosas and ‘koeksiester’ doughnuts. Cape Town is yours to explore at your leisure on day three; stroll along the trendy districts of the V&A Waterfront where you can shop in chic boutiques and dine on the water's edge. You could also trek up Table Mountain or learn about the anti-apartheid movement at nearby Robben Island.
On day four, drive to the town of Stellenbosch, based in South Africa’s spectacular winelands, for a two-night stay. You will sleep in a uniquely-furnished Superior Room at the four-star Oude Werf Hotel. One of the country’s oldest hotels, Oude Werf is based on Stellenbosch’s centrally-located Church Street. You’ll have the time to tour this charming university town, where historical buildings line winding streets, or stop at the local winery and sample standout vintages, throughout the day.
Prepare to be amazed on day five, as you are treated to a ‘dine and vine tour’. You’ll be led on a brisk ‘Cape Cuisine Walk’ through the elegant oak-lined streets of Stellenbosch, while sampling local tipples such as indigenous teas and treats including artisan breads along the way. You’ll even get to visit South Africa’s oldest house, the ‘Village Museum’ where you can learn Stellenbosch’s unique story. Throughout the afternoon, you’ll be treated to a ‘Vine Hopper Tour,’ taking you into the heart of the Winelands where you’ll visit two estates of your choice and engage in afternoon wine tasting sessions.
The final leg of your whirlwind self-drive trip will take you to the ‘Bush’ region. After driving to Cape Town International Airport, you’ll fly to Hoedspruit for a three-night stay at the five-star Garonga Safari Camp. This is your chance to experience the life of an explorer, while retaining a few creature comforts, by staying in a luxury tent on full board basis. It’ll come with fine linens, indoor and outdoor showers, large plush beds and a wooden deck complete with a cosy hammock to relax in.
Spend the next three days getting in touch with nature on your remarkable safari adventure. You’ll be treated to afternoon game drives during your time here, giving you the chance to spot captivating creatures such as the Big 5. While you’re here you’ll learn about animal and habitat conservation, deepening your understanding of South Africa’s biodiversity. Sleep out under the stars for a night in nearby Bushveld for a truly enchanting experience!
