Read on to explore a few fascinating places you could experience pre- or post-cruise…
The Far East is known for mouthwatering cuisine, beautiful architecture and exquisite beaches but there’s so much to do across this vast area. Keen birdwatcher? Thailand is home to approximately 10% of the world’s bird population. Love to cook? Enrol in a cooking class in Cambodia or Vietnam. Love art? Head to one of Singapore’s galleries, and don’t miss the ArtScience Museum. Singapore is one of Travel Counsellor Sharon's favourite cities and she also recommends adding these to your itinerary: "A Singapore Sling in Raffles hotel, Marina Bay Gardens, Singapore Botanical Gardens, a boat trip around the Singapore River and an open top Hop-on Hop-off bus tour".
Japan is a beautiful country all year round – you can even ski here in winter – but the dazzling sight of pale pink cherry blossom in spring is definitely worth a visit. And for a moment to remember for years to come, explore Bagan (Myanmar) by hot air balloon at sunrise or sunset.
Dazzling beaches and bright blue waters might define the Caribbean islands, but you’ll find lots to do if you want to combine a beach break with a few adventures.
In Jamaica, explore the largest botanical gardens in the Caribbean, Hope Gardens or hike the Blue Mountain Peak, nestled in Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (pictured above). Don’t miss trying the sweet, spicy and fruity jerk sauce! As Travel Counsellor Donna says, “You definitely have to try jerk chicken! I suggest Scotchies restaurant for authentic Jamaican cuisine. Rick's café in Negril is the coolest place to sit on top of the cliff and watch the cliff divers in action.”
In Barbados, wander around the exquisite colonial buildings in Bridgetown and discover the stunning plantation houses, full of the histories of years past.
From ancient buildings to art, fresh seafood to sandy beaches, the Mediterranean is a delight of places to wander and uncover. While away days hopping across Greek islands before discovering more of the Med or head inland in France on a ramble through lavender fields and vineyards before boarding your ship. Travel Counsellor Sally spent time in Provence, visiting Crillon le Brave and the surrounding areas (the vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Côtes du Rhône are just 30 minutes west of Crillon for any wine-lovers!): "I so recommend drifting around this part of France for a couple of weeks. During our stay, we walked to a nearby town, Bedoin, via the quarries and forested lanes and paths. The village is simply delightful with the main road which has terrace cafés, shops and lots of activity. The many visitors are cyclists, hikers and tourists there for the route up to the famous Mont Ventoux."
And two mesmerising beaches to add to your Mediterranean itinerary? Costa Smeralda in Sardinia and Zlatni Rat, in Brač, Croatia (pictured above).
These are a few favourite places you could explore on your tailor-made cruise holiday but the world really is your oyster!
