As part of a recent South Africa trip, a group of Travel Counsellors set out to experience the country first-hand, exploring the places, stays, and local moments that help shape more personal holidays for their customers. While Kruger National Park was a major part of the itinerary, the journey there offered something just as memorable. The Panorama Route in Mpumalang became a scenic road trip filled with deep canyons, dramatic waterfalls, forest walks, small-town food stops, and viewpoints that made everyone pause for longer than planned. It was a reminder that South Africa isn’t only about safari; the routes between each stop can be every bit as rewarding.
A first taste of Mpumalanga at Angel’s View
The route began after a first night at Angel’s View, a distinctive property overlooking the escarpment. With grass-covered rooms tucked beneath the pool, terraces facing out across the valley, and avocado, citrus, and macadamia trees growing nearby, it gave the group a peaceful first taste of the region. Dinner brought the local flavours into focus too, with dishes including zucchini and mozzarella fritters, oxtail, and a macadamia and pear tart. Even before the road trip properly began, the setting helped everyone ease into the pace of South Africa, where the views, food, and hospitality all felt like part of the same experience.
Canyons, rivers, and quiet rituals
The next morning, Blyde River Canyon gave the Panorama Route its first big moment. One of the largest canyons in the world, it offered the kind of scale that is hard to take in straight away. When the group arrived, the scene was calm and still, with barely any wind and only the sound of waterfalls and rapids rising from far below. It was followed by Bourke’s Luck Potholes, where the Blyde and Treur rivers meet, their names meaning ‘happy’ and ‘sorrow’. Here, the group learned about the local custom of washing your hands and face in the water to wash away bad luck, a small ritual that added a thoughtful moment to the day.
Big views from Lisbon Falls to God’s Window
From there, the scenery kept changing. Lisbon Falls brought an impressive 85-metre drop and a beautiful viewing point, before the group continued to God’s Window for one of the most memorable views of the route. The walk to the top was rewarded with wide-open panoramas that seemed to carry on forever. On a clear day, you can see towards Mozambique, but even without perfect visibility, the space and stillness made a real impression. It was a reminder that the Panorama Route is not about rushing from one stop to the next. The best moments come when there’s time to stand still, look out, and let the scale of the landscape sink in.
Pancakes, gorge walks, and a change of pace
Lunch in Graskop added a more relaxed, local feel to the day. Harrie’s Pancakes has helped put the town on the map, and after trying the food, it was easy to understand why. The group sampled savoury and sweet options, including a bobotie pancake filled with warmly spiced mince, followed by a Peppermint Crisp pancake using one of South Africa’s much-loved chocolates. Later, the Graskop Gorge Lift offered a completely different perspective, taking the group down into a cool forest walk with steps, signage, and information about the area’s wildlife, plants, and history. For those after more adrenaline, zipline and bungee swing options were also available, but the gorge walk itself felt more than worthwhile.
