A guide to Australia’s South West Edge road trip

Perth to Rottnest Island: a coastal paradise

Your journey begins in Perth / Boorloo, a city full of natural wonders and raw beauty. Relax on the iconic Cottesloe Beach or explore the vast Kings Park and Botanic Garden / Kaarta Koomba, one of the world's largest inner-city parks. Just a short ferry ride away lies Rottnest Island/Wadjemup, a relaxed island nature reserve that feels like a world apart from the city. Home to 63 immaculate beaches and 20 pristine bays with an abundance of marine life, it’s also where you can meet the world's happiest animal, the adorable quokka. A stay in a luxury eco-tent behind the dunes of Pinky Beach offers a unique opportunity to sleep under the stars in this pocket of paradise. Back in Perth, immerse yourself in culture at the WA Museum Boola Bardip or enjoy a cruise along the Swan River / Derbarl Yerrigan before setting off south.

Margaret River: a gourmet's dream

The journey south from Perth is a unique experience. You can swim with wild dolphins in Rockingham or pass through Mandurah / Mandjoogoordap and Bunbury / Goomburrup, both known for their playful bottlenose dolphin populations. Your route will take you to Busselton / Undalup, home to the longest timber-piled jetty in the southern hemisphere, which features one of only six underwater observatories in the world. Soon, you’ll arrive in the Margaret River Region, Australia’s most premium wine region. This area offers an exquisite blend of award-winning wineries, such as Vasse Felix, world-class surf breaks, and ancient caves. Discover local culture with a Koomal Dreaming tour or hike a section of the famed Cape-to-Cape track. As evening falls, unwind at Smiths Beach Resort and watch a magnificent Indian Ocean sunset.

The towering forests of Pemberton

Leaving the coast behind, your journey takes you inland towards the Southern Forests. The drive through towns like Nannup and Manjimup, the heart of truffle country, prepares you for the grandeur of Pemberton. Here, the landscape is dominated by the colossal Karri trees, some of the tallest trees on Earth. This part of the drive is a forest adventure, where you can explore the wilderness on foot or by canoe along the tranquil rivers that wind through the valleys. Take the opportunity to drive across the spectacular Yeagarup Dunes -Australia’s largest land-locked mobile dune system and one of the true geological wonders of the southwest. Rising suddenly out of the forest and slowly advancing inland, these shifting sands offer an extraordinary contrast to the dense canopies.

Albany / Kinjarling and the scenic South Coast
Continuing east, you'll travel through the peaceful town of Walpole, where the famous Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk allows you to stroll among the canopies of 400-year-old tingle trees. The road then leads you to Denmark, with its green pastures and serene coastal inlets, before you arrive in the historic port city of Albany / Kinjarling. This is a key location for whale watching, particularly during the migration season when southern right and humpback whales frequent the coastline. Albany's dramatic coastline, with its rugged cliffs and natural harbours, provides a formidable backdrop for exploring the region's rich history and natural attractions, like The Gap and Natural Bridge in Torndirrup National Park.

Esperance / Kepa Kurl: where nature takes your breath away
The final leg of your journey along the scenic south coast takes you to Esperance / Kepa Kurl, an ocean and nature lover’s dream. The coastline here is legendary, famed for its turquoise waters and some of the whitest sand beaches in Australia. A visit to Cape Le Grand National Park / Mandoowernup is essential, where kangaroos are known to lounge on the immaculate shores of Lucky Bay. This is a place to swim, surf, fish, or simply walk along the coastline, absorbing the pristine environment. The contrast of the brilliant white sand against the clear blue water is a sight that remains with you long after you've departed.
