Bhutan: A Journey of Culture, Calm, and Awe

Bhutan had been on my bucket list for years, and now that I’ve experienced it firsthand, I can say with certainty: it is every bit as magical as you imagine, and more.

From the moment our Drukair flight descended into Paro, I knew this trip would be special. The landing, framed by towering Himalayan peaks, is one of the most beautiful and unforgettable approaches in the world. Add to that the warmth of the crew and their genuine hospitality, and I knew I was in for something extraordinary.

Our journey began in Thimphu with a heartfelt welcome. We stopped by a serene riverside, enjoyed a hearty lunch, and had our first hotel visit at Yarkay Thimphu. By evening, the capital was alive with weekend energy, the town square buzzing with laughter, families, and music.

Over the next few days, Bhutan unfolded in layers. Standing before the Buddha Dordenma, one of the world’s tallest Buddhas, was humbling. Immersing myself in the traditions at Simply Bhutan was like stepping into living history. Meeting the quirky takin, Bhutan’s national animal with a goat’s head and an ox’s body, made me smile.

Each day brought something new. In Punakha, we were treated to a delightful set menu lunch at COMO Uma Paro, followed by a peek at & Beyond, which carried an African-safari-meets-Himalayas vibe. Our overnight stay at Punatshangchhu Cottages was pure charm with riverside cottages and the sound of rushing water just outside our window.

The Punakha Dzong, a fortress of staggering beauty, left me in awe before we journeyed onward to Paro. At Le Méridien Paro, we enjoyed a delicious international buffet and a tour of the hotel’s lush grounds. Its location, just minutes from the airport and surrounded by mountains, makes it a perfect base for exploring the valley.

Another highlight was visiting the soon-to-open Dawa at Hilltop by Heeton, where the chef kindly created a dairy-free meal just for me. With sweeping views from every window, it is a property I am eager to share with future travelers.

But of course, nothing compares to the moment I had been waiting for: the trek to Tiger’s Nest. ?? We set out early, the misty rain adding drama to the landscape. The hike took about six hours, each step bringing us closer to the legendary monastery clinging to the cliffside. Reaching the top felt like both an accomplishment and a gift, with breathtaking views and a deeply spiritual energy.

The perfect ending came at Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary. After a nourishing lunch, we indulged in soul-soothing spa therapies, followed by an evening of cultural dance around a bonfire. Wellness, tradition, and serenity came together in one unforgettable stay.

As my journey came to a close, I realized Bhutan is not just a destination, it is a feeling. A slower rhythm, a deeper breath, a gentle reminder of life’s simple and profound joys.

For those seeking a journey of discovery, wellness, and cultural immersion, Bhutan will touch your heart in ways few places can. And when you are ready to experience it, I would be delighted to help craft your very own Bhutanese adventure. ???
