Indonesia Beyond Bali
Volcano Mornings, Dragon Islands and Barefoot Luxury
Yes, Bali is brilliant. But the real magic for many of my clients comes from pairing Bali with somewhere more untamed. Contrast is what makes a holiday feel big, even when your time is limited. And Indonesia does contrast better than almost anywhere.
The Komodo factor
Do you want a destination that genuinely feels like the edge of the map? Komodo National Park is it. UNESCO-listed and made up of rugged volcanic islands like Komodo, Rinca and Padar, it sits right in the heart of the Indonesian archipelago.
People come for the dragons, obviously. Watching the world's largest lizard stalk across a dusty ridge is not something you forget in a hurry. But the marine life is the quiet show-stealer. WWF ranks the park's dive sites among the best in the world, from thrilling current dives with the chance of manta and pelagic sightings to slower muck dives for the detail lovers.
This is exactly the kind of place where I recommend private boat time, even if it's only a couple of nights. It changes the whole feel of the trip. You wake up somewhere new, swim before breakfast, and the day simply flows from there.
Flores
Next up, Flores. This is the island most travellers skip, and honestly, that's their loss. Picture misty volcanoes rolling down to coral seas, scenic drives that are actually worth the drive, and villages where life carries on much as it has for centuries. Our local partners recently inspected the route across Flores and Komodo and came back raving about that exact mix of nature, culture and island hopping.
It's rugged, it's real, and it gives you those views that make everyone go quiet for a second.
If you’ve got 10 days, here’s how I would break it down
- Nights 1 to 4: Bali (reset mode). Wellness, design-led hotels, gentle culture and seriously good food. This is where you land, exhale and find your holiday rhythm.
- Nights 5 to 7: Flores (texture and terrain). Volcano viewpoints, village encounters and landscapes that feel wonderfully far from anywhere.
- Nights 8 to 9: Komodo, by private boat or a luxe coastal base. Dragon walks, empty beaches, snorkelling straight off the deck, then proper downtime.
As a guide, a trip like this typically starts from around AED 25,000 per person at the boutique five-star level, rising well beyond that with private charters and top-tier villas. There's genuine flexibility depending on how you want to balance boat time and land time, so tell me your budget comfort zone and I'll shape it from there.
