We returned to Georgia in February with a slightly expanded crew- 12 of us in total: three (Dubai based) families and an uncle who flew in from London. After a brilliant trip in 2025 with the same group, we couldn’t resist doing it all over again. This time we stretched the stay to five nights so we could ski four full days (vs. four nights and three ski days the previous year) and it made all the difference.
Why Gudauri works for families (and Dubai-based travellers)
Gudauri is an ideal short-ski getaway when you’re based in the UAE. It’s a quick three hour flight on low-cost carriers, same time zone (no jet lag!), and everything from hotels and transfers to lift passes and lessons comes at a friendlier price than many European resorts. The snow and conditions are generally excellent for families, and the slopes are family-friendly, making it easy to keep kids entertained and safe.
Trade-offs to know
No resort is perfect. Gudauri is compact, with fewer red and black runs than Alpine resorts, lifts that are slower than many European alternatives, and piste grooming and signage that can sometimes be inconsistent.
For intermediate-to-expert skiers, three days is often enough; a full week can feel repetitive. That said, for repeat visitors and families wanting easy access, quick build up of skills due to repetition of runs and great value, it’s a lot of fun.
Getting there and first impressions
We flew with Air Arabia from Abu Dhabi, which included a generous baggage allowance and onboard meals - everything you want when you’re hauling ski gear and kids. We started the holiday at Premier Inn AD Airport the night before, a perfect, low-stress way to kick things off. The kids loved the playground goodbyes at school before reuniting a couple of hours later at the hotel for dinner and games.
On the morning of departure, we met airside for breakfast, boarded with iPads primed with movies (alternatively Air Arabia also provides Sky Time inflight entertainment you can use on your device), and before we knew it we’d landed, cleared passport control, and collected our bags. A prebooked transfer minibus took us up the mountain in around three hours. This year there was more snow than our previous visit, the valley whitewashed all the way up which only amplified the excitement.
Where we stayed: Gudauri Lodge
We chose Gudauri Lodge again for good reason:
- Quiet, family-friendly location away from New Gudauri’s party scene
- True ski-in/ski-out access to a locker room right off the slope
- In-house rental shop (prebooking gets a discount and you can store gear in your locker)
- Lift passes available in the hotel to avoid slope queues
- Larger family suites, a cozy bar with a fire, sunny après terrace, and consistently good food
- Spa with an indoor pool and a large outdoor hot jacuzzi surrounded by snow; a huge hit with the kids
Ski days, lessons, and rhythms
We booked private children’s lessons again with Vagabond Ski School, easily the best decision of the trip. The instructors (again) were brilliant, patient, and made fast progress with the children. The three older children (9/10 years old) enjoyed some off-piste, red runs, and playful jumps (the black run was closed on both trips). The younger two (6/7) gained confidence on the reds and became little speed demons on the blues, practicing repeats and even starting to pop small jumps.
Our pattern became predictable and perfect: drop the kids for lessons, adults ski from about 10:30–13:00, meet at Vitamin Café near the top lifts for lunch, then ski together into the afternoon. On the one afternoon with zero visibility some of us opted for the spa, a welcome alternative to whiteout skiing.
Food, après and nights out
We rotated dinners each night, revisiting some favourites and skipping a couple of previous choices. Highlights:
- Gudauri Lodge = consistently reliable food and cozy vibes
- Gudauri Loft = great atmosphere and lighting for a relaxed evening
- Drunken Cherry in New Gudauri = a taxi ride worth the après and lively dinner scene
Lunch was reliably at Vitamin Café, where we shared khachapuri, khinkali, tomato soups, and local drinks between runs.
Tbilisi extension: architecture, baths and Barbarestan
When the other families returned to Dubai we stayed an extra night in Tbilisi. We loved the Rooms hotel for its historic feel, thoughtful design, and the staff’s retro-inspired uniforms. Our family suite (two connecting rooms) was ideal. The hotel lunch was high-quality and energizing for an afternoon of wandering.
We explored the crooked clock, sulphur baths, small waterfalls, and the general joy of intentionally getting lost in Tbilisi’s twisting streets. Dinner at Barbarestan was unforgettable with dishes inspired by an 1874 cookbook, impeccable service, and a sense of stepping back in time. Waking to fresh snow in Tbilisi on our final morning was the perfect bookend to the trip.
Takeaways
Gudauri is a superb, sensible choice for families and quick ski escapes from the Gulf: close, affordable, and fun. If you’re after legendary groomed runs or a massive lift network, look elsewhere. But if you want uncomplicated travel, great children’s instruction, cozy lodging with ski-in access, and more snow days than stress days, return visits like ours make it clear why Gudauri keeps calling us back.
On our return we almost immediately booked another ski trip for Spring break in Austria!
