Travelling with three kids (ages 4, 9, and 11), our goal was simple: swap screen time for the great outdoors, sample new flavours, and make some core memories. From the moment we arrived, Bosnia delivered in every way.

Hotel President in Sarajevo’s old town, every stop felt like a home-from-home.
The locals genuinely loved our kids, and we were embraced everywhere we went-our
kids were greeted with warmth and smiles, and service was always thoughtful.

Worried about dining? Don’t be-halal options are plentiful, and the food is
simply superb. We started our days with aromatic Bosnian coffee,
hearty Bey soup, and mouth-watering ćevapi, topped off
with fresh baklava and some delightful treats from a hidden bakery in the old town. Pro
tip: skip the hotel breakfast for a morning adventure to the local bakeries-you
won’t regret it!
Sarajevo’s Family-Friendly Magic
Historic Old Town:
If your family loves history, Sarajevo is captivating. We wandered cobbled
streets in the old town, discovering mosques, churches, and reminders of the
city’s extraordinary “east meets west” atmosphere.
War Museums & Storytelling:
Museums bring history to life-my older kids were fascinated by the war
exhibits, providing powerful reminders of historical events and how hope emerges
from hardship.
Nature, Snow & Adventure:
Bjelašnica in winter is a snowy playground-think crisp mountain air and family
time on the slopes (perfect for first-time snow lovers). Snow falls from December, but peak time is January to February. We had limited snow this visit as it was early in the season... but my husband did manage to get some snowboarding in as they did have some of slopes open and the kids enjoyed sledding right in front of our hotel. Tarcin Forest Resort
was an super relaxing: ideal for hiking, wellness and, crucially for us, switching off
from screens. Great for littles with a little farm with horses, goats and sheep, as well as a small little forest adventure playground for the slightly bigger kids.
Beyond Sarajevo:
Hiring a car unlocks even more: crystal-clear lakes, tumbling waterfalls, and
tranquil forests-all within easy reach for day trips. We loved the freedom to
explore at our own pace.
