Oman: The Middle East's Best-Kept Secret? Why I've Fallen in Love with It All Over Again

Nat Adams on 09 Oct 2026

From spectacular desert landscapes and turquoise wadis to beautiful beaches, warm hospitality and understated luxury, Oman really does have it all.

I've been fortunate enough to visit some incredible destinations through my work as a travel agent, but every now and then somewhere comes along that really captures my heart. For me, Oman is one of those places.

I first visited over 15 years ago and absolutely fell in love with the country. Returning this October reminded me exactly why. In fact, I think I loved it even more the second time around!

Oman is, without doubt, my favourite country in the Middle East. It's authentic, welcoming, incredibly beautiful and feels wonderfully safe. Unlike some of its glitzier neighbours, Oman has retained so much of its traditional character and culture, which is a huge part of its appeal.

And the best thing? There's so much more to Oman than simply enjoying a luxury hotel in the sunshine.

The Chedi Muscat – Timeless Luxury

My base for this visit was the stunning The Chedi Muscat, somewhere I had stayed more than 15 years earlier and remembered with enormous affection.

I was delighted to discover that it was every bit as lovely as I remembered.

The Chedi is one of those hotels that manages to feel effortlessly luxurious without being remotely ostentatious or soulless. Its elegant architecture, beautifully landscaped gardens, peaceful atmosphere and exceptional attention to detail make it a very special place indeed.

On this occasion, I stayed in a Chedi Club Suite, which was a real treat.

One of the hotel's standout features is its spectacular swimming pools, including the iconic Long Pool. There are also beautiful restaurants, a fabulous spa and plenty of peaceful spaces to simply relax and enjoy the surroundings.

What I particularly love about The Chedi is its sense of calm. It feels sophisticated and exclusive, but never showy.

For couples looking for a luxurious escape, particularly those who appreciate beautiful design, excellent food and impeccable service, I really can't recommend it highly enough.

Discovering Muscat – Culture, History and Authentic Arabia

Although it would be tempting to spend an entire holiday relaxing at The Chedi, it would be such a shame not to explore Muscat.

One of the highlights of my visit was the magnificent Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.

This is an absolutely breath-taking building and a wonderful introduction to Oman's culture and traditions. The architecture is extraordinary, with beautiful stonework, intricate detailing and vast, peaceful spaces.

It's one of those places that photographs simply cannot do justice to.

We also explored Muttrah Souk, which offers a completely different experience.

With its winding passageways, traditional stalls, colourful displays and the scent of frankincense in the air, it's a wonderful place to soak up the atmosphere of old Arabia.

I love destinations where you can really feel the history and culture around you, and Muscat delivers that in abundance.

What struck me again was how Oman has managed to develop as a modern destination without losing its identity.

There's even fantastic scuba diving on offer, something we experienced on our last trip there.

A Night in the Desert – An Experience I'll Never Forget

One of the most memorable parts of the trip was heading out into the desert for an overnight adventure.

There's something quite magical about leaving the city behind and watching the landscape change as you travel towards the dunes.

The desert is spectacular, particularly as the light begins to soften towards sunset.

Our evening included dinner beneath the stars, followed by the opportunity to enjoy the extraordinary stillness of the desert at night.

Away from the lights and noise of the city, the sky is simply incredible.

It's a completely different side of Oman and one that I would encourage anyone visiting the country to experience.

You don't have to be particularly adventurous to enjoy a desert stay. It's about slowing down, appreciating your surroundings and experiencing something that feels a million miles away from everyday life.

For me, combining the desert with a luxury stay on the coast is one of the things that makes Oman such an appealing destination.

Swimming in a Wadi – Oman's Natural Beauty

Another highlight was discovering Oman's spectacular wadis.

For anyone unfamiliar with them, wadis are valleys or riverbeds, some of which contain beautiful natural pools of clear water surrounded by dramatic rocky scenery.

Having the opportunity to swim in one was a fantastic experience.

It's easy to associate holidays in the Middle East with hotels, beaches and desert landscapes, but Oman offers so much more.

The scenery is incredibly varied, from rugged mountains and deep canyons to lush pockets of greenery, beautiful coastlines and vast stretches of desert.

If you enjoy combining a little adventure with relaxation, it's an absolutely wonderful destination.

The Chedi and Silent Sands – An Exciting New Partnership

One of the things that particularly excited me during this visit was learning about The Chedi's partnership with Silent Sands, opening up even more opportunities for guests to discover Oman beyond the hotel.

Silent Sands offers immersive desert experiences, including overnight stays at its Canvas Camp, allowing visitors to experience the extraordinary beauty and tranquillity of the Omani wilderness.

For those wanting to explore further, there are also longer adventures of up to six days, offering the opportunity to discover more of the country's remarkable landscapes.

I think this is a fantastic addition to a stay at The Chedi.

Imagine spending a few days enjoying the hotel's beautiful pools, spa and restaurants before heading off into the desert for a completely different experience.

It's exactly the sort of combination I love putting together for my clients – somewhere luxurious to relax, alongside experiences that create genuinely lasting memories.

And it means you can enjoy both sides of Oman without having to choose between a relaxing holiday and an adventure.

The Food, the People and That Wonderful Feeling of Safety

As someone who loves good food, eating well is always an important part of my travels, and Oman certainly didn't disappoint.

From the dining experiences at The Chedi to the opportunity to enjoy food in completely different surroundings, it was another wonderful part of the trip.

But beyond the hotels, scenery and experiences, it's the atmosphere of Oman that really stays with me.

The people are welcoming, the pace feels relaxed and the country has a genuine warmth about it.

I also felt incredibly safe throughout my visit, something I know is particularly important to many of my clients.

There's a quiet confidence about Oman. It doesn't feel as though it's trying too hard to impress you – it simply does.

Who Would I Recommend Oman For?

The beauty of Oman is that it appeals to so many different types of travellers.

It's perfect for couples looking for winter sunshine and beautiful hotels, but equally suited to those who enjoy exploring, discovering different cultures and experiencing a destination beyond the resort.

I particularly recommend it for:

  • Couples looking for a luxurious, romantic escape with excellent food and beautiful surroundings.
  • Adventure lovers wanting to explore deserts, mountains, wadis and dramatic landscapes.
  • Culture enthusiasts who appreciate history, architecture and authentic local experiences.
  • Families of all ages whether teenagers who want to combine beach, desert adventures and cultural experience for an unforgettable trip or those with younger children who simply want to relax with some winter sunshine.  For the latter there are some wonderful family-friendly resorts such as The Hilton (formerly Shangri-La)
  • Travellers who have already visited Dubai or Abu Dhabi and would like to discover a very different side of the Middle East.

Oman also works beautifully for a shorter sunshine escape or as part of a longer, tailor-made holiday exploring different regions of the country.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Oman?

For most visitors exploring Muscat, the desert and the northern part of the country, October through to April is generally the best time to travel.

Temperatures are more comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor adventures, while still offering that wonderful sunshine many of us crave during the British autumn and winter.

My October visit was a lovely reminder of just how appealing Oman can be as a destination at this time of year.

My Final Thoughts – Why Oman Deserves a Place on Your Travel Wish List

Returning to Oman after more than 15 years was such a special experience.

I had wonderful memories of my first visit, particularly The Chedi, and sometimes returning somewhere you loved can be a little disappointing.

Not this time.

The Chedi was every bit as beautiful as I remembered, and exploring more of the country only reinforced how much I love it.

Oman offers that rare combination of luxury, authenticity, culture, adventure and natural beauty, all without losing its wonderfully relaxed character.

It's a country that deserves to be explored, rather than simply visited.

And after two visits, I can confidently say that Oman remains my favourite destination in the Middle East.
