Are Travel Agents More Expensive?

Laura Crouch on 01 Jan 2026

If you’re used to booking your own holidays, you might assume that asking someone else to organise one will cost more. It’s a fair question. You’re getting someone’s time, research and advice, so surely there must be an extra cost somewhere? The honest answer is that booking through a travel agent won’t always be cheaper. It won’t automatically be more expensive either. It depends on the holiday, the arrangements and what you’re comparing.

Here’s how I’d suggest looking at it.

Start by comparing the same holiday

Two quotes can show the same hotel and dates while including quite different things.

Before deciding which offers better value, check:

  • The exact flights, airports and timings
  • The room category and board basis
  • Cabin and checked baggage allowances
  • Transfers, including whether they’re shared or private
  • Any included extras
  • Payment, amendment and cancellation terms
  • Mandatory charges payable locally

None of these differences automatically makes one option better. But they do matter when you’re comparing prices.

A lower price might suit you perfectly if you’re happy travelling light and arranging your own transfer. If you need checked bags and transport to the hotel, include those costs before making your decision.

A cheaper option can still be the right one

There’s no reason to spend more on something you don’t need.

If you’ll barely use the hotel facilities, paying extra for an extensive resort might make little sense. If breakfast at a local café is part of the pleasure of travelling, a room-only rate could suit you better.

Equally, an inexpensive hotel outside the centre might become less appealing once you consider the journeys you’ll make every day.

What matters is whether the saving works for the way you want to travel.

When I put a holiday together, that’s the sort of detail I want to understand. Where would spending more improve your experience, and where could you comfortably save?

What about fees?

I don’t charge a research or planning fee. I’m paid by the suppliers I book through, so you don’t pay a separate fee on top of your holiday price for my time, advice or help organising your trip.

That doesn’t mean every holiday will be cheaper through me (although I try to be as competitive as I can!), but using my service doesn’t automatically mean paying extra either.

What if you find it cheaper elsewhere?

Tell me.

There’s nothing awkward about saying you’ve found another price and want to understand the difference. If you send over the details, we can check whether we’re looking at the same arrangements.

There may be a different room, fare or booking condition. Or it may simply be a lower price for the same thing.

I wouldn’t promise to beat every offer. What I can do is explain my recommendation and be honest about the comparison, so you can make an informed choice.

How involved would you like to be?

Some people love researching destinations and come to me with hotel choices, saved itineraries and plenty of ideas. Others would prefer me to take the lead and make recommendations from the beginning.

I’m happy working either way.

If you’ve already found something you love, we can use that as our starting point. If you’re unsure where to begin, I can help you narrow down the options. And if you’d like a mixture - doing the enjoyable research yourself while I bring the arrangements together, that works too.

It’s your holiday, and you can be as involved in the planning as you like.

So, is using a travel agent worth it?

Price matters, but so does booking with someone you trust.

You should feel confident that the company looking after your holiday will be there when you need them, that your questions will be taken seriously and that you’ll have someone to turn to if things don’t go to plan.

That trust starts before you book: with honest advice, clear information and someone who takes the time to understand what matters to you. It continues through the preparation, while you’re away and when you return.

For me, that’s an important part of looking after your holiday. I want you to feel comfortable picking up the phone, asking a question or letting me know you need help—and confident that I’ll work through it with you.

If you’re planning a holiday, whether you have a detailed wish list or just the beginnings of an idea, I’d love to help.
