Barbados: Seven Days of Sea Breezes, Smiles and Easy Island Exploring

Ellen Farley on 27 Apr 2022

I spent a week in Barbados and completely fell for this beautiful little island. We used our stay to relax, explore and enjoy some of the island’s most memorable experiences, from Friday‑night street food to cruising along the west coast at sunset.

Staying at The Crane Resort and Residences in St Philip

One of the things I loved about Barbados in general is how much choice there is in where and how you stay. You can opt for a smaller hotel on a bed and breakfast basis and eat out each night, or choose an all‑inclusive resort and have almost everything wrapped up in one place. Whatever you pick, that easy Bajan hospitality is a constant.

We stayed at The Crane on the quieter east side of the island. Perched on a clifftop, the resort overlooks the Atlantic Ocean with sweeping views out to sea and that constant gentle sea breeze that instantly relaxes you!

On site there are five pools and seven bars and restaurants, so you are never short of somewhere new to swim, sip or dine in. Below the cliffs is Crane Beach, a beautiful stretch of sand that guests can reach by stairs or elevator.

Oistins Friday Night Fish Fry

One of the real highlights was Oistins Friday Night Fish Fry, a Barbados institution and a must if you are there over a weekend. From early evening, the area fills with stalls serving freshly cooked fish and local sides, with music playing, people dancing and smoke drifting up from the grills.

The atmosphere is fantastic: families, friends, locals and visitors all mingling together, plastic tables, generous portions and lots of laughter. The food is exactly what you hope for in Barbados: simple, authentic and full of flavour. The friendliness of the Bajan people really shines through here and it feels like you are joining a local night out rather than something staged for tourists.

Sunset Catamaran Cruise

The next day we saw Barbados from the water on a luxury catamaran cruise. It was a beautiful way to spend an afternoon and evening, sailing along the coast and watching the island from a different angle.

There was plenty of space to relax on board, time to swim and snorkel, and as the sun began to set we were served dinner on deck. With the sky turning pink and gold, it felt like a classic Caribbean moment!

Harrison’s Cave: Underground Barbados

Another day we swapped sea views for stalactites and headed inland to Harrison’s Cave. The 500,000‑year‑old cavern added real variety to the week's itinerary, not something you see everyday.

A guided tour takes you through a network of underground passages, past crystal‑clear pools and intricate limestone formations. It feels cool and otherworldly and offers a complete contrast to the beaches.

Beach Time and Slower Days

Of course, no trip to Barbados would be complete without some unhurried beach or pool time. Between excursions we made sure to slow down, spend time by the water and simply enjoy the sunshine. A couple of quiet hours with a book, a gentle swim to cool off or a stroll along the white sand were exactly what we needed to balance out the busier days.

Barbados Island Safari

To see more of the island’s interior, we joined a Barbados Island Safari tour, which turned out to be one of the most fun days of the trip. Travelling by 4x4, the tour takes you through some of the more rugged countryside.

Highlights included Chalky Mount pottery, which overlooks the striking Scotland District, and the historic St Nicholas Abbey - a 17th-century Jacobean plantation house and working steam-mill distillery producing unique cane syrup rums. Along the way, our guide shared stories and local snippets, and once again that easy Bajan warmth made the whole experience feel relaxed and friendly.

Why Barbados Works So Well for a Week Away

Looking back, our seven days in Barbados felt very well balanced. We had time to relax at The Crane, enjoy the beaches and soak up the slower pace of island life, but we also fitted in a real mix of experiences.

For anyone considering a week in the Caribbean, Barbados is a destination that rewards you if you head out and explore, even just a little, while still giving you all the beach time you could want. Please get in touch if you would like to know more!
