Swim-up pools in a beach jungle setting

23 November 2020

Mexico

Mexico’s Riviera Maya is the long strip of famed white-sand coastline stretching south from Cancun. A tourism hotspot, there are many premium resorts to choose from, and many feature pool suites or swim-up rooms.

Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya

Renowned for its beautiful beach and large, swimmable lagoon, Akumal (or Place of the Turtles as its locally known) is one of the Yucatan’s oldest coastal resort areas and home to Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya.

Set in the heart of the area, this extensive adults-only resort has suites staggered around winding walkways and secluded pools to ensure the most fabulous views of the exotic landscape and ocean. Suites are found in several buildings each with their own pool; choose one of the Swim-Out suites for its terrace with direct access to the pool where you can enjoy a casual swim, or just dip your feet in to cool off when the sun gets a little too hot. Each has an in-suite whirlpool for two and artistic flourishes of burnt orange, fuschia and gold.

Enjoy the signature all-inclusive offering, Unlimited-Luxury® including limitless access to gourmet à la carte dining, 24-hour room and concierge services and a huge array of daytime activities and live nightly entertainment including themed parties. There’s a world-class spa too - Secrets Spa by Pevonia® - offering dozens of rejuvenating treatments.

Further to the North, on the other side of Playa del Carmen, sits the calming, natural environment of Mayakoba. The sugar-sand beachfront here is among the most picturesque on the Riviera Maya, where you can scuba dive, sail or take to a jet ski, kayak or paddle-board. The complex has a racquet club, archery range and one of Mexico’s best golf courses, whilst at the town square - El Pueblito, or "Little Village" – you can explore farmers’ markets, cooking classes and boutique shops. There’s even an on-site cenote, El Burrodromo, a natural cave filled with crystal clear water which can be explored with a guide.

Rosewood Mayakoba

Rosewood Mayakoba has a deserved reputation as one of the best hotels in the region. Its open-plan suites are particularly spacious and set beachfront, with ocean views or overlooking the beauty of Mayakoba’s winding lagoon and lush mangrove jungle. Choose the Deluxe Overwater Lagoon Suite for a unique overwater setting and outdoor lounge terrace with heated plunge pool, garden shower and private boat dock.

Families will love the expansive two-and-three-story suites at the beachside area of the resort, overlooking the sparkling sea. Each has a private plunge pool and rooftop sun deck, perfect for unwinding as a family, although these suites are adjacent to the Punta Bonita family pool deck if you prefer a change of scene. All are complemented by butler service.

It’s a very family-friendly place, with connecting suites available, a babysitting service and a Rose Buds Children programme with games and activities for little ones. Kids' menus are available in the Agave Azul, which serves delectable seafood with Asian influences overlooking the lagoon and Punta Bonita, a casual lunch spot with panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea.

Good to know

Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula is home to more than 6,000 cenotes—subterranean limestone pools full of crisp groundwater, stalagmites and stalactites. Find time to excuse yourself from your own infinity pool to check out these natural swimming holes. Cenote Ik Kil, close to the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, is a couple of hours away from these hotels and one of the best.
