Six Senses Zighy Bay, Oman
This very special eco-resort encourages its guests to fully tune out of modern life for the duration of their stay by living barefoot and mobile-phone free. Meanwhile, its bewitching setting between the Hajar Mountains and the sparkling waters of Zighy Bay allows it to offer an exceptional array of exciting eco-friendly activities and means of connecting with the surrounding landscape, including paragliding, kayaking, hiking, mountain-biking and scuba diving.
Six Senses Zighy Bay was founded on the ethos of caring both for the environment and its local community. As well as looking after local schools, hospitals and infrastructure, it involves staff and villagers in tree-planting sessions. Guests are invited too. Other green measures in force include recycling/upcycling 80% of its organic or glass waste and even producing its own bottled water, using the saltwater that is filtered for its saltwater pool (the largest in the Middle East) and sending treated waste-water out to the desert for irrigation. Meanwhile, it’s created a marine protected area on the surrounding Musandam Peninsula and mainland Oman, among other environmental projects.
A two-hour transfer from Dubai Airport, Six Senses Zighy Bay is blessed with a compelling terrain that just begs to be explored. On the bay side, sustainable activities include snorkelling and diving in search of stringrays, inquisitive turtles and other regional marine life. But know that your diving hosts are not just charged with keeping you happy and safe – they’re trained to remove ghost nets left by fishermen and rescue sea creatures that have got snared in them. The resort team also organises monthly beach clean-ups and involves guests in the likes of Earth Day, World Environment Day and International Coastal Cleanup Day. On the other side of the resort are rugged mountains with all kinds of rugged activities to match, all of which will bring out your inner adventurer. Six Senses Zighy Bay is a particularly great place to bring older kids: the Teen club includes wadi-swimming, canyoning and raft-building among its exciting outings.
Food and Indulgence
It almost goes without saying that food miles are kept to an absolute minimum here, with produce sourced hyper-locally where possible, sometimes from the resort's own farm and organic garden, and with the resort's chefs making dawn trips to Dibba fishmarket. The cuisine digs deep into local tradition, whether you’re indulging in seasonal Bedouin-style dining on the beach or feasting on Arabic delicacies in Spice Market. The signature restaurant Sense on the Edge (293m up, with views down over the bay) offers regional flavours given a Spanish twist by an Andalusian chef. There are other indulgences here, whether it’s movie nights on the beach or pampering and wellness in the highly acclaimed spa with its hammam. A kids’ club entertains younger guests and helps them make new friends while parents are sneaking in some R&R. Suites and villas (82, built in natural stone) are cosseting cocoons that blend traditional Omani elements with contemporary chic, state-of-the-art amenities and outdoor showers. All villas have private pools and come with their own Guest Experience Maker to help you have the most memorable of holidays. With villas with up to four bedrooms, Six Senses Zighy Bay is a great choice for a multi-generational holiday.
