Shamwari Private Game Reserve, South Africa
Shamwari Private Game Reserve is a luxury safari and game lodge destination in South Africa’s ecologically and culturally significant Eastern Cape Province.
One of South Africa’s foremost game reserves, and a malaria-free region, you’ll see the coveted Big Five roaming the landscape, alongside flora and fauna native only to the Cape.
Staying at Shamwari (‘my friend’ in Shona) means you are participating in an immensely successful conservation project, which returned the land to the rich biodiversity for which it was once renowned. Shamwari partners with Virginia McKenna’s Born Free Foundation to provide rescued lions and leopards with refuge and a safe environment to live. King was their latest rescue, released as a lion cub to Shamwari’s northern Big Cat Sanctuary, one of two on the reserve.
Shamwari has seven lodges and an explorer camp open during the African summer, each providing distinct experiences. Their luxury tented camp, Sindile, is the most recent addition having opened last year. A secluded, luxurious getaway set deep in the African veld, the camp mimics a solitary leopard’s sanctuary, blending with the surrounding bush while providing excellent vantages over the Bushman’s River and surrounding plains.
The nine luxury free-standing tents, elevated above the surrounding bush, sleep two adults. Here, you can enjoy uninhibited views, unsullied by any other man-made structures or light pollution, but with all the creature comforts – air-conditioning, WiFi, lounge area with indoor fireplace, en-suite bathroom with bath and indoor/outdoor shower. Unwind on your private deck with heated plunge pool, in the lounging area under a pergola or head to the camp’s dining area and bar. They’re situated to make the most of the views over the reserve, with focal points including a large harvest table and fire pit. There’s also a Boma and relaxation retreat.
Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle, Thailand
Nested in the bamboo jungles of Northern Thailand, Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle is a magical escape from reality, offering privacy, seclusion and the intimate encounter with nature that many of us are craving at the moment. Views stretch over the Ruak river or dense forests to Myanmar and the mountains of Laos beyond.
There are just 15 air-conditioned tents with king-sized or twin beds, a standalone hand-hammered bathtub in the living room, and outdoor shower with sizable outdoor deck - some with private wooden hot tubs – for those memorable views. Rustic yet elegant safari-style tents have their own distinctive scheme, with customised, handcrafted furniture made from local bamboo and leather, complemented by netting and hurricane lamps.
The camp’s rehabilitated elephants are its main draw. Join them as they enjoy their morning bath; watch out for splashes from a mischievous elephant! Humans, too, have their own bath-time treat with the new Forest Bathing experience. Discover the healing power of nature as you relax with an hour of pure ‘me-time’; listen to the birdsong, the breeze rustling through the leaves and be mindful of your senses. Besides reducing blood pressure, it strengthens the immune system and boosts mood.
Most of the camp venues are open-air. Enjoy Thai, Burmese and Laotian specialities at the Nong Yao Restaurant, or with a private candlelit dinner in the elephant camp. The lofty spa has a dramatic open-air treatment room, surrounded by the tropical jungle.
Take an early-morning hike up to the Camp Peak, where yoga or meditation sessions are also offered, explore the mountain trails – accompanied by elephants – or cruise down the Ruak River aboard a traditional longtail boat. Return to your tent for a relaxing soak or spa treatment before watching the sunset before those stupendous scenes.
