Sintra's charm lies in its unique blend of natural beauty and architectural wonder. The town is known for its stunning palaces, including the iconic Pena Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Perched atop a hill, the Pena Palace is arguably the crown jewel of Sintra. Its colourful façade, a blend of yellows, reds, and blues, instantly transports you into a fairy tale world. Commissioned by King Ferdinand II in the 19th century, this Romanticist palace is a remarkable example of architectural eclecticism. It incorporates various styles, from neo-Gothic to Moorish, creating a truly unique masterpiece.
Inside the palace, you'll find lavishly decorated rooms that offer a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Portuguese royalty.
The palace's surrounding park and gardens are beautiful and a great place to stop and rest and enjoy the peaceful setting. My boys loved discovering the hidden grottoes, and there were many exotic trees and plants from around the world to discover.
Another must-see attraction is the Castle of the Moors, perched high on a hilltop, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Its rugged stone walls and ancient history make it an interesting place to explore.
This ancient fortress dates to the 8th and 9th centuries when it was constructed during the Moorish occupation of the Iberian Peninsula.
As you ascend the stone paths and walls of the castle, you'll be rewarded with awe-inspiring panoramic views of Sintra and its surroundings. We all loved walking the battlements of the Castle of the Moors and you felt as if you were stepping back in time, experiencing the fortifications that once defended the region. A word of warning – the steps are tricky, and there are a lot of drops so some climbs are not for the faint-hearted and for people who fear heights.
This historic site is not only an opportunity to immerse yourself in medieval history but also to appreciate the stunning natural beauty of Sintra from a unique vantage point.
Sintra is also home to the Quinta da Regaleira, a mystical estate with enchanting gardens, underground tunnels, and a striking initiation well. This site is a playground for those with an adventurous spirit and a love for the mysterious. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to visit Quinta da Regaleira, Monserrate Palace, Seteais Palace or Capuchin Convent which are more sites worth exploring in Sintra.
Both Pena Palace and the Castle of the Moors are easily accessible from the centre of Sintra and can be visited on the same day if you plan your time wisely. Given their historical significance and the breathtaking views they offer, these two attractions are essential stops for any visitor to Sintra.
Location and Getting There
Sintra is conveniently located just a short train ride away from Lisbon, making it an easy day trip from the capital city. The train journey is about 40 minutes, and the station is located right in the heart of Sintra, making it accessible and convenient for visitors. I would also advise taking a taxi if you are like us and are staying in Cascais. It was a 15-minute journey and didn’t cost a lot for the ease and convenience of a taxi. Tips for a Memorable Visit
1. Take Your Time: Sintra is a place best enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Don't try to cram all the sights into a single day, as everything is spread out, and rushing will only lead to stress. Consider spending at least a couple of days exploring the area to fully appreciate its beauty.
2. Book Early: Sintra is a popular destination, and attractions like Pena Palace can get incredibly crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. To avoid long queues and the possibility of being turned away, book your tickets and time slots well in advance with me. I would recommend booking the earliest time slot possible to beat the crowds.
3. Wear Comfortable Shoes: You'll be doing a lot of walking in Sintra, especially if you plan to explore the Castle of the Moors and Pena Palace. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes suitable for uneven terrain, as you'll be walking up and down hills and cobblestone paths.
4. Start Early: Begin your day as early as possible. I would suggest starting with a visit to the Castle of the Moors in the morning when it's cooler and less crowded. Afterwards, you can enjoy a scenic walk up to Pena Palace, taking in the breathtaking views along the way.
5. Pack Snacks and Water: Since you'll be spending a lot of time on your feet, it's a good idea to bring some snacks and water to keep you energized and hydrated throughout the day.
