Birds, beaches & orangutans

My husband & I had been to Malaysia “pre-children” & had enjoyed a wonderful two-centre holiday in Kuala Lumpar & Borneo – lots of shopping & sightseeing in the buzz of KL followed by a magical encounter with the orangutans in the rainforests in Borneo.

But now we were back almost 10 years later & this time we had not only our little munchkin in tow, we had brought along moral support in our friends who also had young kids! So this trip to Malaysia was going to be a very different affair!

We decided with the flight schedules from Dubai, we would spend 2 nights in KL upon arrival to get the kids settled – this seemed to work well. We had chosen a beautiful hotel in the centre of the city & found some lovely night markets nearby to stroll about with plenty of opportunity to tickle the taste buds with the various Asian delights. The next day, we revisited the KL Bird Park which delighted even more on this visit with the fabulous reaction from the young children’s faces at all the colourful birds flying freely around them.

On the recommendation of a colleague, we had chosen to spend the majority of our trip at Pangkor Laut Island – a 4-5hr drive from KL which passed very quickly as we travelled through local towns & villages. The speedboat ride across from the mainland was very well handled with resort check-in & luggage concierge completed before we boarded the boat……and then we arrived on this idyllic island. A very large island at that – it required a minibus to transport us to the beaches on the other side of the island (across a mountain!) & to some of the restaurants but everything we needed was there.

The resort was well-catered for families with plenty of pools to choose from but we chose to spend most of our time at the beach which was so peaceful & calm, it seemed wrong to miss this in such a great setting (plus we’d never have had the entertainment of the wild boar racing through each day looking for food!). And so for the next 5 days we simply chilled at the beach, the kids playing happily in the sand & the sea whilst we refreshed & rejuvenated from the crazy life that is Dubai! Going on holiday with kids wasn’t so bad after all………….
